Architype's 12-unit Passivhaus development on a rural site in Callaughtons Ash, Much Wenlock was recently named by the UK's Sunday Times as one of 'Britain's Greenest Streets".
Architype was appointed by South Shropshire Housing Association to design the greenfield scheme - one of a number of sites in the county identified by the group for affordable housing - with Architype using the Passivhaus standard to tackle local fuel poverty. The development comprises of 10 socially rented properties, with the remainder marketed for shared ownership.
The scheme is a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom houses, with the Passivhaus design offering residents a healthy and comfortable lifestyle, with the robust building performance that will keep operational costs to a minimum.
The design for the homes is the product of thorough community and client consultation, with special attention paid to the appearance of the properties, which sit comfortably within the rural local vernacular and are clad in locally sourced materials.
Investigating the local vernaculars of Shropshire, the development aims to sit comfortably in its rural surroundings, complemented by a natural palette of UK sourced materials. This includes clay roof tiles that have been quarried and made within 25 miles of the site, lime render provided by local company Lime Green and UK grown thermally modified hardwood cladding, promoting the Housing Associations aims for a cohesive circular economy in Shropshire.
In-use performance has translated to ultra-low energy bills for residents - with many reporting up 90 percent savings on heating from previous accommodation.
