The Calgary Courts Centre is one of North America’s largest consolidated justice facilities housing 73 courtrooms and 94 judicial chambers. Phase 1, is comprised of two towers flanking a central transparent glass atrium. The 24-storey north tower houses the Court of Queen’s Bench and the 20-storey south tower houses the Alberta Provincial Courts. A 26-storey glass atrium connects the two towers providing substantial natural light into the interior. The atrium also provides the main system of public circulation, housing 12 glass enclosed elevators which transport the public to a system of bridge elevator lobbies connecting the two towers at all levels. The challenges of designing a tall atrium building in a cold climate were overcome through a design which achieves superior building envelope performance resulting in a significant reduction in overall energy consumption and the achievement of a Silver Level of LEED® Certification. NORR, as Associate Architect, is responsible for the building envelope and all interior public spaces; working with Kasian Architecture Interior Design & Planning Inc. who are the Principal Architect and responsible for the remaining architecture of the building. The Design Consultant is Carlos Ott, and the Courthouse Consultant: Spillis Candela DMJM.
