The spirit of mass production is not in mass customization, but in the unique deployment of the same pre fabricated piece. "Calculated Pull" embraces a simple connection, with only two variations which create space not through its own form but through the deployment of many of them in the field. To create the vertical experience necessary to compliment the atrium, the structure envisioned was small bundles of flexible rods, each connected only to its nearest neighbors, each no more than 10’ high, but together capable of reaching 25’ up into the space above. Connection pieces served as structural ties, allowing the rods to both rest of the ground and support rods lifted above the ground. Rods are not threaded through the connection but rather slid in from the side. Each rod touches four connection pieces, each gripping it from a different direction keeping it in place. The connections not only serve as the necessary structural piece, but it is their unique placement through the field which generates volume. The location of each connector pulls apart or brings together the rods to shape the space inside. The repetition of the same simple piece allows for the creation of more complex and unique volumes through the simple arrangement of them in location. That volume is, in program, passage, drawing visitors and students in on their way to the studios above. That volume, in form, is the vertical structural expression of the connection pieces suspended within it
