DESIGN INTENTION
Set along Highway 29 between St. Helena and Calistoga, this project is just one of three commercial sites in the Napa Valley. Our challenge was to reimagine the collection of buildings - which formerly housed factory outlet stores - as a chic destination marketplace devoted to wine and food. Our goal was to create an engaging and varied set of experiences that, while visually diverse, felt like a single, seamlessly chic experience, capitalizing upon this rare commercial opportunity in the valley.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Our design process was an exercise in editing. We started by eliminating superfluous trim and decoration on the exteriors to allow the simple agrarian architectural forms to shine through. Clerestory windows illuminate the central courtyard, broad new window and door openings welcome visitors inside, and varied floor levels create a sense of discovery. Multiple terraces house a variety of outdoor gathering areas, which not only function as outdoor extensions of the individual venues, but as a defining element of the marketplace as a whole. Both the bar and the VIP tasting lounge offer direct views of the adjacent Brasswood Estate winery.
Our design vocabulary is derived from the context of the wooded mountains that cradle the Napa Valley. A weatherized, standing seam roof and a color palette drawn from the subtle hues of the surrounding countryside unite the exteriors of the stripped-down building forms and anchor them firmly in the valley’s agricultural tradition. Each interior space is individually designed, but strong architectural details and a high level of craftsmanship produce a sense of cohesion. Beams repurposed from an Idaho sawmill and white oak wallboards from a Kentucky racing barn impart a sense of rustic sophistication.
Most importantly, we focused attention on the completely re-designed courtyard as the heartbeat of the destination by reversing the focal point away from the arrival, and toward the mountains and the small, jewelbox structure at the rear of the two-level courtyard. The result is a rich, layered experience, with a distinct sense of place.
