Program The MIT rowing department has commissioned a new boathouse to house the men’s and women’s crew as well as the surrounding community. The boathouse is to hold over 30 boats, 45 ergometer machines, a practice tank, circuit training, as well as a reception hall to host regattas. Site The boathouse is to sit along the Cambridge side of the Charles River, west of the famous ‘Smoot Bridge’ and Alvar Alto’s dormitory for MIT. The street experiences high traffic but should allow for safe access from the MIT campus to the boathouse. Due to a 7 ft. stone-walled drop-off from the street to the water, the design must accommodate ADA access to the boathouse as well as the dock. Boats must also be easily moved from a vehicle to the dock and storage rooms.Process The process of design for the boathouse began with study of light interacting with a solid surface that has been recessed and extruded. This experimentation with the different dimensions of a flat plane led to a solution to the sectional difficulties of this site. The process moved forward after examining the properties of the boats at the boathouse. The structure reflects the disruptive movement that comes from the oars, rowers, and water as well as the simple, graceful movement that appears in the transverse.
