This small apartment is located in Milan, Italy. With 39m2 it is a compact retreat from busy street life.
The original colorful floor tiles –different in each room- give character and uniqueness. They were the main inspiration for the renovation, meaning that the color of all new elements should complement the tiles. Besides that, the challenge was to make a big impact with a small budget, using second hand furniture and smart interventions.
In the old situation the apartment was divided into two main spaces: a bedroom with access to a big terrace and a living room connected to a tiny kitchen space and a bathroom. A closed hallway connected the two main spaces, making the apartment feel cramped.
The main intervention was to turn the living room into the bedroom and vice versa: by breaking down a few walls, the living room would become more spacious. It is now big enough to house the kitchen and is directly connected to the big terrace. The bedroom was relocated in the more secluded space.
The new fixed furniture was custom made by a local carpenter according to our drawings. By using the same laminated wood and color throughout the apartment, all spaces feel more connected. Custom made also meant it would perfectly fit in narrow spaces and corners, making the apartment more efficient. The lower base part of these furniture was painted pale green, the top parts crisp white.
In the bedroom a wardrobe divides the room into two parts with the bigger space for a bed, and the smaller space that acts as a corridor to the bathroom and an area to access the wardrobe. Holes in this furniture piece let daylight enter and function as hooks to hang clothes. On one side of the bedroom a long desk allows for even more storage space.
All other furniture and accessories are vintage and found on online auctions. The color of each item should fit with the color palette of the custom made furniture and floor tiles. For example, the ocher yellow bed-sofa allows for family and friends to stay during a visit and matches with the yellow of the tiles. The wall painting on the back is hand drawn and refers to the metro station, which is located conveniently just around the corner.
The bathroom is the only space completely renewed. The new wall tiles blend with the green of the fixed furniture. The new floor tiles refer to the colorful flooring in the other spaces. The addition of plants enforce the green tones in this space.
