This project aimed to renovate an old-Japanese style, 2-story wooden house.
The house is located in Gero-shi, Gifu-ken, Japan, and surrounded by nature. Yasuhiro Sone is the designer, who planned to renovate only the interior of the house to make the space reborn, but left the outside of the house unchanged which harmonizes with the surrounding natural environment. He also planned to leave the original beams and pillars, and removed the second floor and partition walls to open up the interior space.
The living rooms and a bathroom were put into the side of the space, and in the middle of the space each room is connected by a catwalk. It is a dynamic construction which coheres with the powerful structure that has supported the house for many generations.
In this house, old and new materials are in great harmony, spaces are lighted by sunrises from openings in various heights, and a breezy circulation pervades. Beyond the frosted glass, natural beauty such as lush greenery shows up on the surface of the wide windows.
