The Byram house, built on a “small lot” in inner city Brisbane,
is a house with two distinct personalities. The additional site width allowed
us to explore a completely new layout that focuses around a new, contemporary
double height room, whilst the existing plan was reinterpreted to offer
alternatives to how spaces are used. The projection of a crafted, timber clad
‘pod’ to the side of the property, offers a truly
unique entry experience and gives a clue as to what lies behind
the original cottage. A huge central internal void floods the house with light
and allows all elements of the home to engage with this volume. These dramatic
volumes and light wells were integrated to enhance the living experience in a
heavily constrained inner‐city site. This house has been lovingly crafted and includes a
rich palette of stone and timber, with details down to the door handles, light
fittings and towel rails all being designed to suit.
