The project called for a total redesign of the ground floor of a large detached house in Buckinghamshire, UK. The family wanted a modern, practical family home for relaxing and entertaining, that would reflect their lifestyle and how they wanted to use their home.
The original layout featured a kitchen / family room at the rear, overlooking the garden. A separate dining room at the front of the property was rarely used, and two additional reception rooms were under-utilised. It was calculated that 40% of the space was scarcely used.
Interior designers in London LLI Design calculated that knocking through the wall between the kitchen and dining room, would create a large family living space with a dining area at one end, positioning the kitchen at the heart of the home. A dramatic central island, wrapped in dove grey frosted glass and under-lit LED strips was specified for a real wow factor. A double sink, waste disposal unit, water softener, pop up sockets and an induction hob with downdraft extractor were all contained in the island. The rest of the kitchen was fitted with back to wall units along one side, which contained two ovens, a steam oven, microwave and a large glass fronted wine fridge, the storage units were specified with fold back pocket doors to contain all the usual kitchen paraphernalia - kettle, toaster etc and keep the kitchen visually clear.
At one end of the kitchen a simple but strong pallet of greys and reds were used in the family area, along with curated artwork.
At the other end of the kitchen a block of dramatic Flos Fucsia glass pendants were hanging in the dining area above the honed granite dining table.
The underused reception room at the rear of the property was transformed into a cosy TV room, using a strong pallet orange and grey, dramatic artwork and an oversized classic arc lamp finished the room. The other reception room was transformed into a bright and attractive study for the clients two children.
The open plan area was fitted with underfloor heating, and contemporary radiators were added elsewhere. An intelligent lighting scheme was designed, which could be controlled from wall mounted keypads and / or by iPad / iPhone.
Overall the redesign completely changed the space, creating an uplifting and comfortable home for the family to enjoy. The project recently received a Highly Commended award in the International Property Awards - Interior Design - South East, UK category in association with Gaggenau & Rolls Royce Motor Cars.
