The Bushwick motorcycle garage and courtyard replaces a former marble shop behind a residence in a dense industrial zone of Brooklyn. In the early twentieth century, the structure was designed as a garage. As the neighborhood buildings and infrastructure fell into disrepair, a rotating series of industrial uses scarred the site.
We removed the former dilapidated marble shop and courtyard, preserving only the existing bearing walls and their accumulated years of marble dust, graffiti, and stains that define so many buildings in Bushwick, Brooklyn. In contrast, refined steel frame and custom-milled sliding cedar panels redefine the space as a flexible indoor/outdoor workshop for repairing motorcycles, hosting parties and small-scale art shows and performances. The new roof is engineered to support deep soil for a fully planted garden in the coming years.
Bushwick Motorcycle Garage won the 2012 Brooklyn AIA Design Award of Excellence in Adaptive Reuse.
