BURST*003 is a full-scale prefabricated house that utilizes the temperate coastal climate of Eastern Australia to passively maintain comfortable indoor conditions year-round, using no artificial heating or cooling systems. In summer, the high northern sun is deflected by the roof overhangs and narrow window slits, while cooling breezes from the northeast circulate through the interior via a carefully configured system of vents, windows, and openings. During winter, the lower sun angle allows light to stream in and penetrate deeply, naturally warming the home.
The residence includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an informal, open plan living, dining, kitchen, and play area. Additional features include covered parking for two cars, storage for surfboards and recreational gear, open lawns for cricket and bocce, and a clay half-court for basketball.
Structurally, the house functions as a tensile system, similar to a kite or airplane wing, composed of interlocking ribs that form the frame and are secured by tensioned skin panels. This lightweight yet high-strength construction minimizes environmental impact during transport and allows for quick on-site assembly as each component fits seamlessly into place. Because the majority of the fabrication process is digitally executed, sizing and fitting issues are resolved in advance, ensuring less than 5% material waste.
