The project proposal is to give the existing Union Station and the City of Chicago a new urban space, a horizontal landscape that further enhances the visual and physical connection with the Chicago River. By means of infrastructural layers (i.e. pedestrian, automotive, railway, and electronic flow of information) architecture can turn this unique site into a clear image of the city and its proud history. The project also proposes to act upon the old station building by means of a vertical landscape, an interrupted texture, allowing for sufficient sunlight to enter the great hall from above, hence maintaining the mystic feel of the space. The main idea is to activate the great hall from inside, by making it a grand lobby from which all diferent programme can be accessed (i.e. auditorium, congress centre, hotel, ticket sales, administrative offices, and train platforms).
