VIA Architecture designed the new $12.5 million Burien Transit Center, a bus transfer facility and park and ride that has a spacious passenger platform and features six bus bays, including one dedicated to paratransit service. With covered waiting-area benches and windscreens, lighting, and 24/7 monitored security, there is now a safe place for transit customers to wait for buses or to utilize the park and ride.More than just a transit facility, the design of this center intends to achieve a sense of “place,” both now, to serve surrounding commercial development, and in the future, when the center will be part of a pedestrian-oriented and mixed-use community. Overall, the center will accommodate 12 bus routes, 8 bus layover bays, and over 4,000 passengers per day. The adjacent park-and-ride lot has parking for 340 vehicles and five charging stations for electric vehicles.
