BUNNY EARS – BABY & KIDS SHOE STORE
YTÅ created a shoe store for small
children, where the main idea was that of a shoe box, inserted into a white,
empty space. This ‘box’ was then dissected, in order to reveal its contents and
create different environments and scales.
The various ‘segments’ of the shoe box act as
showcase, shelves, seats, playing surfaces, counter and storage, depending on
its location. For this, YTÅ opted to work with smooth MDF wood,
which was left mainly in its natural state.
The space around the ‘box’ is mainly a white
canvas, over which graphic elements were inserted.
On and along the main entrance wall, real size furniture-like stickers ‘hold’
shoes and accessories. This gave a fun and illusionary twist to the space and
also toned down the scale, as ceiling height was over 4m. Screws were used to
hold the shoes in place, so that they could easily adapt to their varying
widths. Hanging lamps punctuate the entrance hallway and also help reduce the
store’s height. This was important to bring the environment down to the
children’s scale.
The project worked with a color palette based
on the brand’s pantone and its immediate contrasting colour. Variations were
made in their lighter tones. Colour was used inside the shelves and inside the
counter. It was important to keep the colour use moderate, so as to highlight
the products. The brand inside the store was reinforced by its colour and Bunny
symbol, which appears now and then on the walls.
The various instances throughout the space were
then wrapped up by the use of a colourful and checkered flooring. This covered
the entire store and created a fun and playful environment, without visually
polluting the elements in display. The smooth surface of the floor is welcoming
for barefoot children and easy to clean, creating a hygienic environment for
toddlers to play freely. Other elements such as a large blackboard, reading
space, rocking horses and coloured size-appropriate seats help make the
children feel like never leaving and mums feel at ease.
The store’s
façade was entirely coated with the brand’s colour, except for the storefront
window, which sticks out in a cardboardy tone, representing the beginning of the ‘shoe box’. A big,
fluorescent Bunny sits over it and lights up at night.
