Bullets and Balls
Nelson Cricket and Nelson Rifle Associations Practice Facility
Saxton Oval, Nelson, New Zealand
Small Bore Rifle and Cricket share a limited set of similarities. Both require approximately thirty metre long, rectangular practice ranges, and involve projectiles launched in one direction (only one likely to ‘return to sender’). Cricket requires a naturally lit space, with volume to accommodate protective nets; Rifle shooting, a dark, low space, with reinforcement to side and rear walls.
Our solution researched and adapted a cost efficient approach to enclose the required space using a proprietary system often used for agricultural sheds to construct and fit out this facility. 1,200square metres are constructed for less than $800.00 per square metre. Simple devices meet environmental needs; opposing garage doors ventilate the cricket facility, south facing dormers admit daylight.
Cricket occupies the dormer lit southern edge, adjacent the future ‘Number Two’ cricket field and accessing the outdoor nets. Shooting takes the dark low space on the northern, sheltered side; ‘Bullets and Balls’.
External materials match adjacent structures at Saxton Oval with ongoing development of car-parking, footpaths and shade structures being undertaken by NCC to integrate this facility to the wider Park.
Completed prior to two International One Day fixtures in 2016, and now used extensively, this facility has been completed to International Standard and acknowledged as one of the best indoor training facilities in New Zealand.
