Design competition entry for a summer-long multi-purpose event space for the Supima cotton brand to be located under High Line Park between 23rd and 24th Streets in New York City.To create an iconic image for Supima Cotton's installation, we chose to utilize high end fashion references combined with the surreal. The main feature of the installation is a "runway" constructed of 3' x 5' segments suspended by Supima cotton fabric from the high line's steel structure over a field of cotton plants. Each segment contains a mannequin envisioned to be in avant-garde poses, displaying the t-shirts supplied by Supima cotton. The suspended runway creates a high profile display area for the custom T-Shirt designs while at the same time allowing the Supima cotton fabric to be the main imagery of the installation. The use of the Supima cotton fabric is continued in the suspended seating. This part of the installation creates a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with and feel the quality of Supima cotton. Three foot cotton ribbons, loop down over 18', to create a suspended seat that reinforces the cotton imagery but also provides a fun interactive experience for visitors. The sales area is envisioned as the exclusive "back stage" area of a fashion show. Instead of creating a singular "pavilion" for the sales area, the display area was elevated to the main iconic feature of the site while allowing the "back stage" area to be a simple and efficient transaction counter with storage below. The event space has seats on either side, with the suspended runway as a backdrop. During the various events, the suspended runway will anchor the site while still providing open space to be configured for each event.
