The Brownstone School is housed in a NYC landmarked building built in 1900 on a residential, tree-lined street. It is 6,465 square feet and has five classrooms, one per floor, featuring age-appropriate areas that promote both child-driven and teacher-directed activities. The renovation included the interiors of the building as well as upgrades to the exterior and entries into the school, all surfaces had to be toddler height and all healthy, sustainable finishes. The work included children’s art areas, kitchen work stations, play areas, and child storage systems. It also included designs for the Teachers, Support Staff and Parent volunteers.
As a landmark building, the exterior of the building was maintained to its 1900 elevations. The interior, though not mandated by NYC landmarks, preserved most of the existing historic details. Each classroom design incorporated the new millwork and construction into the historic woodwork. The existing fireplaces, mantles, brick walls, windows and window trims, and mouldings were repaired and refinished. The circulation area is based around the beautiful, sculpted Mahogany staircase. The addition of the new guardrail, necessary for safety and building codes, was designed to suspend off the side of the historic railings and to minimally disturb the original millwork.
