Located in a genteel Upper West Side neighborhood, this historic brownstone was built in 1891. The clients, an astute Manhattan family in need of larger spaces, wanted to renovate both the interior and exterior back to some of its’ former glory as a five-story private residence.
The historic mahogany paneling, wainscoting and coffers were restored throughout the house, along with the gracious and intricate curved wooden staircase that joins all the floors. The existing wood and parquet floors were restored or replaced in kind, and the mechanical systems were upgraded and brought up to code.
The clients have traveled extensively and wanted to incorporate elements and motifs of their favorite places into this house. This is evidenced throughout in the materials, colors and details, such as the Chinese Red Master Bathroom with lattice accents and a dramatic dragon faucet.
