As the
Brooklyn Navy Yard moves into the 21st century to become a premier
industrial park, it does so by simultaneously challenging its future
and respecting its past. On one combined site set at the entry to the
park, the Navy Yard proposes to establish the Brooklyn Navy Yard
Historical Center. Housed in the fully restored United States Marine
Corps Commandant’s Residence and a new 20,000 SF LEED-certified modern
addition attached at the rear, it will accommodate local not-for-profit
institutions. The site will give the gated and once cloistered Navy
Yard a public face as it reaches out into the surrounding community and
builds bridges with its neighbors through various forms of educational
outreach.
