Feilden+Mawson’s winning competition design for new university buildings in a run-down city centre will create a new vision for the site, which will house the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Architecture and Centre for Education and Consultancy.
The proposal creates a new urban landscaped space, framed by two existing listed 1880’s buildings and shaped by new extensions. The main design criteria were economy and general flexibility of academic spaces, which was achieved by a careful designation of use internal zones and the relationship between the new and existing buildings. The use of copper perforated panels on the new buildings will reflect light and enhance the feeling of nature from the new garden.
