Nizhniy Novgorod, which lies at the confluence of two rivers — Oka and Volga, and is divided in two parts by Oka, today practically does not have a single embankment — with walking area, panoramic views, beaches, piers, recreational spots. An island on Volga, which happens to be located in the centre of the city, is a point of intersection of conflicting interests of developers, city administration, citizens and local historians.
The tack of the workshop was to invent the scenario of future of the island. After the analise today situation of the city our group decided to think about a single structure that could connect different parts of the city, change the actual conditions and dynamics of the riverside, and introduce more density through the introduction of new activities. Density conceived not only as the set of different facilities and functions, but also in the sense of new relationships: that is, trying to match private and public aspirations, creating bike, pedestrian and green paths; even including in the design distinct infrastructures (public transportation systems, parking, piers). The only way to guarantee at the same time design quality and control of a complex program, is to think according to the category of Megascale.
