This design was for an athletic center located on the water in Brickell, a business and high-end residential area of downtown Miami. Currently this site is just a parking lot, which interupts the walkway along the edge of the waterfront. There is also a small, park adjacent to our site, which is very seldom used because its current surroundings do not attract anyone to the area. Therefore, a major focus of this project was to draw more people to the waterfront, and to make the area more enjoyable and pedestrian-friendly.
In order not only to accomplish this goal, but also to attract people to the gym itself, I split the program into two buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge. On the ground level, I continued the waterfront pathin between the two buildings, so that people walking through can see into the building and be inspired to join the athletic center. Then, after passing in between the buildings, the path continues directly into thepark, and through it back to the edge of the waterfront.
The elevations of my building are based on series of grids created by metal paneling mullions on the glazing, and operable louvers. The majority of the building is a light steel consturction clad in glass and metal panels, but the three circulation towers are concrete. The roofs of the first building are outdoor seating for a small cafe, and are shaded by a large cage structure wrapped in vines.
Both the pool and locker rooms are located below ground level, the locker rooms in the waterfront building and the pool in the building behind it. A hall connects the two areas underground. Because of this setup, the circulation between wet areas is separated from that of dry areas, for which the bridge between the second and third floors is intended.
As the Brickell Athletic Center is meant to accommodate a wide variety of athletic activities, a dock is provided for water sports. It is located on axis with the path connecting the Center to the road, and iscovered by a trellis similar in design to the cage structure on the mainbuilding.
