The concept of
the house was dictated by the site and brief requirements and the inevitable
choice of brick as the main building material; giving a materiality capable of
determining the image of the house. A massive solid, impacted upon by the
restrictions on scale and height and the need to minimise the impact on its
genteel surroundings. Sliding windows are set flush with the brickwork to
reinforce the reading of the form and are placed to give a reserved
relationship between the house and the external spaces; a contemporary
interpretation of the formal relationship between the surrounding houses and
their gardens.
