Brew House was constructed in the 1950’s as part of an original brewery complex in Central Bristol. It was converted into office space in the early 1980’s and is Grade II listed. The building retains its fine pennant and limestone on two façades with 1980’s brickwork on a third façade, all glazing dates from the 1980’s refurbishment. Much of the original internal detail had been lost or covered up in the 1980’s refurbishment..
Externally a new entrance has been created in place of a solid garage door comprising an artist/craftsman designed gate with inset glazed door and screen behind. New windows have been inserted into the 1980’s brick wall.
The greatest change is seen internally in the office suites. The suspended ceilings and cellular office partitioning have gone and the office areas are transformed into light open spaces with high ceilings and good outlook instead of the previous cramped bland corporate spaces. Removal of the blockwork column casings reveals the original cast iron columns and further removes the constricted feeling that the spaces had previously. Further character is given to these spaces by exposing original stonework on the walls wherever possible.
ESHA worked on the project in conjunction with interior designer/craftsman Paul Bradburn.
