The City of Brentwood hired the joint venture of FOG Studio and Mark Davis Design to renovate its existing downtown Library in 2013. Community outcry forced the project to take a step back through a needs assessment to look at the context of the City's past and future growth and look to a more future-proof solution. From the assessment and a slew of development alternatives looking at keeping all, a portion or none of the existing building, came the favored option by City Council and Land Use Development Committee - a new 2-story 20,000 square foot Library.
The new building will have a central courtyard with a dedicated Community room, meeting and conference spaces as well as a digital lab. The concept design for the building takes its cues from the downtown's existing arcade language with a nod to the Sacramento River Delta nearby. The expression of rainwater retention and filtration will also be a key driver in the building's design.
