BREATH | Courtyard House
BREATH is a single-story courtyard house designed to engage all five senses through the integration of natural materials, water, light, and landscape.
Located in a quiet residential area, the project is a renovation and extension of an existing house, incorporating a courtyard and a hair salon. A large 10-meter-long beam—reclaimed from a decommissioned wooden elementary school—supports a striking 5-meter cantilevered roof over the front porch, forming a bold yet calm gesture that anchors the architecture.
The courtyard connects key programmatic elements including the salon waiting space, a hallway, a Japanese-style tatami room, and the entrance porch. A shallow 5 cm-deep stone basin collects rainwater from the roof, casting shifting reflections of light into the interior.
At the heart of the courtyard, a mature laurel tree and a large molten rock serve as grounding elements. Together, these materials and features invite a sensory and emotional experience rooted in nature. The house becomes a gentle, breathable space—hence the name "BREATH"—that blends sustainability, Japanese tradition, and quiet minimalism.
