Breakwater was a finalist in a competition to design a sustainable lake house for a retired professor and his wife, an artist. The design was inspired by the anticipation of retreating to a second home in a new and special environment. By car or by foot, the approach focuses one’s mind and view to the water beyond. The deck emphasizes this experience, guiding and framing relationships to the lake. A central portal promotes congregation that transitions to privacy as the deck steps away along the length of the building. Light and water consciousness led to Breakwater's deep eaves, low profile and simple construction techniques. We feel that with Breakwater, we achieved our goal of creating a house in which one feels at home in nature.
