"The exterior form of the new Athletics Stadium reflects the utopian spirit of the Brasilia plan by incorporating a kinetic geometry. The stadium, therefore, has no fixed identity, but alters in relation to the condition of its surroundings.
The stadium references the iconographic plan for Brasilia, by representing a bird in flight. To do this the large feather like structures are used to envelop the interior stadia program.
The stadiums canopy of Quills provide shelter from changing weather conditions, adjusting to changes in wind direction and sunlight, meaning that the form is constantly in flux offering a unique visual dynamic. The movable envelope also acts ceremoniously, reaching upwards to the sky when an event is about to unfold, and welcoming crowds towards the stadium. It is able to move in a dance like manor reflecting the festival like atmosphere that accompanies sporting events, and in doing so adding another layer of visual spectacle to the games.
The stadium is situated on a plinth surrounded by water pools and dense greenery which provide shade, and cooling for the stadiums public areas during Brasilia's humid summer months. A key design element positions the lower seating ring at plinth level, so spectators are able to access it from above without having to travel up stairs allowing the crowd flow to move freely down to their seats. To facilitate the large concourse, a network of shaded facilities are also situated beneath the plinth, all lit with top light from perforations within the floor structure above.
The design proposes a fluid icon, suited to an environment that is being continually redefined."
