The new Carl J. Shapiro Science Center is the cornerstone project in an ambitious expansion and renewal of the sciences at Brandeis University. With 155,000 GSF of new research, teaching and instrumentation space, the building functions as a catalyst for scientific innovation, interdisciplinary discourse, and a renewed vibrancy of student and faculty activity by introducing a much needed social organization to the science precinct and knitting the sciences into the fabric of the Brandeis campus.
A new pedestrian "river" organizes lobbies, multi-story spaces, and bridges which interconnect new and existing buildings, encouraging cross-campus movement through the hilltop Science Center. A petri dish garden is one of four new landscape spaces that heighten the artificiality of the raised terrace while providing new areas to experience the outdoors.
"While this striking exterior of the Carl J. Shapiro Science Center continues the physical transformation of the Brandeis campus, we expect what happens inside the building to be far more consequential, the Shapiro Center will meet the demands of 21st century researchers and allow Brandeis scientists across all disciplines to work together to solve the Day's most vexing questions." -- Jehuda Reinharz, president, Brandeis University
