This pavilion is the second project on this block done by Arquitectura, refer to ‘Braddon House.’ For this new project, the owner asked us to design a pavilion that was to become the final compositional piece in an already beautiful garden.
The pavilion, set in the northeast corner of the block is a multi-use building. It provides:
- A covered patio and a visual focus for the swimming pool
- Space for recreation and entertainment associated with indoor and outdoor activities
- Studio facilities
- A garden shed
- A double carport
The shape of the building resulted from a desire to create a single elegant space that housed all the main functions of the pavilion. The roof geometry accommodates a seamless transition from single to double height space along its length to include the loft.
A progressively increasing roof pitch on a 600-mm structural grid is used to generate a roof with a curved and twisting geometry. This 600-mm module is expressed in the internal plywood paneling as well as the external cement sheet cladding.
The combination of high and low level windows ensures abundant internal daylight and good ventilation during the day. At night, the wall mounted up-lights brighten the ceiling and walls with soft lighting whilst the pendant lights provide appropriate task lighting.
The distinctive shape of the pavilion is emphasised by the dark finish to its battened wall cladding. This dark facade is punctuated by contrasting white painted pop-out and narrow slit windows. The end result is an elegant building that sits comfortably in the garden and complements rather than competes with the existing house
