BP BRIGHT
LIGHTS Chicago is a unique project that entails a large scale trading floor,
open office workspace, conference rooms, and several food service areas. BP has a strong belief in safety for all
employees, energy savings, and team building.
All of these aspects have been incorporated and honored in the
architectural and lighting design for the project.
The trading
floor space is the feature of the office and is the real showcase of the
project. The space is located in the
Chicago Mercantile Exchange Center at 30 S. Wacker, which holds majestic views
of the city skyline on the east side and the beautiful Chicago river on the west
side. The trading space features a three
story space (33 foot tall ceiling) with a bridge that connects the two towers, (North
and South sides of the building). The
lighting in this space features rows of indirect/direct (2) lamp T5 energy efficient
fixtures all housing state of the art daylight harvesting dimming ballasts and controls. These fixtures also uplight the architectural
wave ceiling which is a modern version of a white sky over the traders
heads.
The open
office spaces feature surface mounted (1) lamp T5 90% direct and 10% indirect fixtures
to light the worksurface and supply a glow to the tile ceiling as well. The hallways along the open office space
feature 8’8” custom linear slots with staggered T5 lamps and a glowing lens to
enhance the vertical rhythm of the space.
There is also a hidden architectural cove along the corridor that houses
louvered fluorescent slots to light the linear metal work along the wall.
The building
has many types of conference rooms that use a simple but effective lighting
approach to each room. They use 2x2
fluorescents with a micro prism lens which distributes the light directly into
the work surface as well as evenly light the walls. Many of the higher end spaces feature 3” T5
slot fluorescents with square trim low voltage wall washers to give an extra
sparkle to the room.
The two
dining spaces use metal halide adjustable accent fixtures to highlight the food
and signage for each space, and fluorescent down lights to generally illuminate
the circulation areas. The seating zones
have energy efficient modern decorative fixtures and a unique backlight glowing
2x2 acrylic tile system, similar to a cloud.
The project
is in the running for a LEED gold standing and the lighting is currently 35%
under the Ashrea 2004 standards, giving the project (3) points for the overall checklist. The project is currently under construction
and plans to open in July of 2010.
