MPA was hired to manage construction and bring the 2007 design of the site up to current code. The project consists of two buildings totaling 21,800 s.f. of new construction: one on a fixed pier structure, the other on a 7,770 s.f. floating barge which will house a gift shop, assembly rooms, exhibit hall, tavern, and offices. The project is unique since the site is located just off of the Congress Street bridge in and is exposed to the ocean. This generates a great deal of site utility coordination, and causes accessibility issues due to the building’s constant movement with the change of tides and passing boats.Finishes were selected with two priorities: -Stay as true to the times as possible by preserving the look of the original Boston Tea Party in 1773.-While maintaining as much historic value as possible, durability is key since the site is expected to have tremendous amounts of foot traffic.
