Project overview
Boston Scientific R&D office is highly inspiring workplace, where through functional and spatial design solutions, science and technology can be experienced by all visitors, concepts are discussed directly with end-user groups and final products meet businesses. It is the place where Boston Scientific spirit inspires employees to improve our lives with highly innovative medical technology solutions.
Project was awarded with Silver Medal at REKA International Design Award ceremony during design week in Kuala Lumpur.
Design Description
“Boston Scientific is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative medical solutions that improve the health of patients around the world”
With this statement in mind, our goal was to create space reflecting company innovative approach and great experience in medical science field. In the same time, specific site conditions, including sloping roof and high volume of space were very challenging.
Combination of requested functions: exhibition space and R&D office are not commonly stacked together as they require different approach from visual and technical point of view. Hence we decided to separate those functions in alternative way. Instead of creating “go-through”, enclosed zones within the same level, we designed them in layers, one above another, connected by main “communication spine”, which plays major functional and design role. Inspired by company products and medical sciences cellular spine binds reception and laboratory with its dynamic, parametrically designed smooth shape, which stands in contrast to brutal concrete walls and ceiling finishes.
In this way we used entire volume of available space to arrange functions accordingly. First floor contains of: open reception, multifunctional room, interactive logo wall and pantry in the back with several interactive areas and waiting pod with company information. From there we enter office zone, where flexible agile workstation area is located near windows and can be adjusted depending on project group requirement. Core functions, like collaboration and utility points, which let employees pick the right place to work, are located along central circulation spine. On the east side there is enclosed portion of office and laboratory.
In order to let visitors see the working process without bothering scientists, on top of the “spine”, along entire office zone we created gallery-mezzanine floor with 3 meeting pods. 1 located above pantry and behind logo wall, another in central portion and one more in the back of the office, connecting mezzanine with meeting room.
Mezzanine parametrical structure is made of prefabricated steel and aluminum components, spray painted on-site. Its light structure let us design this part without any additional supports.
One of the most important tasks during design process was to create environmental friendly, agile and sustainable work ecosystem. There are multiple planters distributed throughout the space, many, easy-accessible water points for employees convenience. There is water reusing system built-in the floor, which helped in awarding project with LEED certification.
Feeling of advanced sciences is improved by implementation of hi-tech audio-visual solutions and custom lighting, which play major role in multifunctional room, reception and interactive areas. Our intention was to create space which would achieve both: inspire all visitors and let all employees feel proud of working at Boston Scientific.
