Social incubator in the South End >> vibrant community + Symbiotic environment >> sharing simple rituals to enrich humans & animals social necessities
The potential site is on the Massachussets Turnpike. The idea is to cover up a portion of the gash to create a new landscape & promenade for the South End and its neighbourhoods. The cars’ era is now over - here come the pedestrians’ era. The Lemurs’ House is a substantial landmark & a new experience while going through the city of Boston. This urban zoo & its landscape intend to act as a unusual spatial experimentation & a ludic pause in this urban jungle. This project will act as a public belvedere proposing unique views and an aerial discovery of the South End’s rowhouses (the South End being the largest urban victorian neighbourhood in the country).
Lemurs are sociable animals. As the sun rises each morning, ring-tailed lemurs sit and face the sun from a tree branch with its legs crossed, back straight, hands low with palms facing out or resting on its knees, and eyes half-closed, exposing their stomachs to the sun (picture a human meditating in a yoga position with legs crossed). Biologists call this behavior sun worship. Sifaka is known as the "dancing lemur" because of its unique ballet-like movement when crossing open ground - rather then move about on all fours they tend to sashay on their hind legs while holding their arms outspread. Sun rises will become events where people can sunbath and meditate with lemurs : outstanding and exclusive moments! Mind-body activities (relaxation, meditation, yoga, aerobic exercise, ballet, leisures, etc.) are fundamental in order to live a cheerful life. The idea is to bring together lemurs and humans in Boston, through architecture, in order to create an oasis in the city : nature + jungle + court yard + events + mind-body activities + public spaces. This project intend to generate an unique place where families, couples, friends, etc. can meet (madagasBAR), enjoy the city (belvedere), relax (mind-body studios), enjoy the sun, watch and even interact with those adorable and fascinating creatures which are lemurs. Lemurs are vulnerable and endangered species. This zoo also proposes exhibitions to inform people about deforestation : a conservation & protection zoo relating forests and animals indigent situations in the world (consciousness-raising). To sum up, the aim of this proposal is to offer an entertaining promenade & an enriching corporeal zoo for all the Bostonians, younger & older. An amusing experience to live!
