As part of the Boscombe 'Sea Change' project and regeneration scheme, funded by the commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) a competition was launched for the design of four new and iconic beach huts to deliver the UK's only purpose-designed accessible beach facilities. Boscombe seafront is a suburb of Bournemouth, one of the UK's top seaside resorts, located two hours from London on the south coast is currently being transformed from years of urban decline into one of the most innovative seaside regeneration schemes in Europe. The LATIS concept evolved around the ever shifting tidal landscape of the British Seaside. The topography was used as a generator to create the tectonics of the huts with a constant reference to the landscape through a large slit window that encircles the huts spatial form; from sea cliff to sand scape. A large roof canopy twinned with a concealed windbreak allows people to sit out in the sunshine. Each hut can be isolated or opened internally into a group where more users can inhabit the huts.It is intended that the completed huts, which will be located to the west of Boscombe Pier, adjacent to Coasters restaurant, will be ready for disabled users to rent next summer.
