Brightly coloured beach huts are a nostalgic symbol of the British seaside. These accessible beach huts designed by Berman Guedes Stretton for the Boscombe Sea Change Competition, express this tradition in a contemporary way. Every material has been chosen for its durability. A concrete wall makes reference to the chalk hill behind, and folds around the building to construct the rear and side walls. Folded steel sheeting has been used to form the roof, with perforated steel used to create canopies, panels and sliding doors to the broad walk. Sat on a plinth, the broad walk has been raised to the level of the road and promenade, making journey for disabled users more accessible. Inspired by deck chairs, colour panels on screens articulate each beach hut. When the sliding doors are closed for security, colour penetrates through each perforated screen, clearly announcing each huts identity.
