The project is part of a broader reflection on the overhaul of the Belcier district and the Armagnac block, and comes after the completion of the development project supporting the extension of the tram line C to Bordeaux train station.
The most distinctive and visible feature of the station is the multi-storey above-ground car park on its southern part which does not simply adjoin, but dovetails with the passenger building, proving that car facilities can contribute to the development of a new type of quality public spaces. Cars can access the car parking, located at the upper levels, directly through a ramp, while the below-ground levels accommodate drop-off areas and short-term parking spaces. The ground level houses a large hall and retail outlets. The height of the building decreases progressively to the north creating tiers of open-air balconies oriented towards the Garonne river and providing multiple outdoor spaces and views of the city.
The position, layout and design of the new building creates a new tree-lined open space which ensures continuity with the urban surroundings. The forecourt, located in the extension of the pedestrian alley and Rue des Terres de Borde, provides a direct and visible access to the new passenger building while forming a new urban space.
Services and retail outlets are laid out around the central part of the concourse within the passenger building, whose large glass façade allows for natural light to flood in. The main circulation routes are located at the junction between the car park and the passenger building and provide access to all of the levels.
