‘Velocity’ is the design theme of this new cinema project, you can see traces of related elements throughout the space to enhance the dynamics of the interior. We created visuals that resemble the light and shadows left behind by cars rushing through the highways in the cities. Such city night scenes have appeared in countless movie scenes, so we’ve decided to capture this mood and project it onto this design.
Custom-made LED strips intersected and stacked freely with carefully allocated double-sided LED screens - which plays informative texts about movies and the cinema continuously, as if moving cars on the street. We’ve integrated this design into the entire space. We use black and gold as the main colors to resemble the sky of the city at night - the dark sky and the golden headlights of the cars work together to highlight the ‘velocity’ design theme.
At the atrium of the lobby, you can see a curved metal plate extending from the outdoor wall into the indoor ceiling, and installed with a squared LED screen. We use metal materials extensively throughout the project to resemble the modern and current city scenery. With the addition of the dynamic LED screens, creating a ‘technological’ atrium full of dynamic visuals. Upon stepping into the lobby, you can see that the long light strips on the ceiling are stacking on top of each other in layers. They connect from afar until up front continuously. The scrolling speeds of the text on the interspersed LED screens are all different - the combination of fast and slow text movement makes the ceiling even more dynamic, which can’t be illustrated by using a single light strip alone.
Follow the lights and you will be guided towards the corridor leading to the auditoriums. The light strips on the ceiling are not only used as a decoration, but also as a sign for different functional areas. In the ‘Parent-child interaction area’, we design the bottom of the light strip as a logo sign so that the audience can quickly find each functional area. In the parent-child interaction area, we still follow the same concept. The entire wall is made into a prop for children to climb. Due to space constraints, the wall is not too high. Even if the child climbs to the top of the wall, parents can still hold the hands of the child easily. The rounded arc design also minimizes the risks that might occur in the children's area.
At the end of the hallway, there is a VIP lounge big enough to accommodate 20 people. We design the wall as a curved surface and extend it all the way to the ceiling surface. The resting area is equipped with coffee tables and single sofas for guests to rest and relax.
Cohesive design elements can also be found at the IMAX auditorium. A curved wall extends from the floor to the wall, then from the ceiling back to the floor - with such layers of arc shapes, they gradually lead the way towards the direction of the screen. The light strips are replaced with red LED screens displaying information of the showing movies. The lights of the steps are also in red colour so to unify the lights of the cinema, thus creating a clean and unique space. In other auditoriums, red linear lights are chosen as well to highlight the wall. The design of these linear lights have thoughtfully avoided the audio or other equipment, so to present themselves completely on the walls. For this auditorium design, we have especially considered the budget constraint presented by the client. Compared with the previous auditorium designs, we have achieved the ultimate simplification for this project, but can still convey the design theme in small details - even if it is as simple as a line, we’d also like to express the feeling of light and shadow of a sleepless city at night.
We have maintained the consistency of the design language even for the bathroom space. The curved shape extends from the ceiling and is designed as a mirror for the sink. At the same time, we’ve simplified the traditional wash basin design into a curved surface. The water will follow the curved surface of the artificial stone and flow back into the drainage hidden behind, which is very different from traditional wash basin design.
We have illustrated the ‘velocity’ design theme throughout the interior decorations in meticulous details. People can immerse themselves in this interior and embrace the light and shadow created within the space, as if they are the actors appearing at a city night scene in the movies.
