The team at Bollare, an LA-based public relations firm, approached baao with a beach-themed inspiration deck and a site in a Tribeca storage warehouse that had never been converted to office space. The firm needed space that was flexible and diverse, incorporating open-plan spaces for desks and a showroom as well as closed rooms to house a photography studio, VIP lounge, executive offices and meeting spaces.
The strategy was to keep the palette and finish for the open spaces neutral and to showcase the heavy timber framing, wood surfaces, and brick walls of the existing structure, which is in a landmarked district. The maple floors were treated with a clear finish, while the timber structure and wood ceiling were sanded and painted. Floor outlets provide flexibility for desk and clothing racks. Strip lighting and spots on different circuits allow for ambient (office) or directed (showroom) illumination depending on the configuration.
In contrast, the enclosed spaces received a much higher level of finish while maintaining flexible configurations and visual connections. The executive offices are enclosed by a wall of glass that allows light from the perimeter to pass into the showroom. Garage door openings on the studio and VIP lounge allow activities to spill out into the showroom. Touches of detail at the entry engage visitors, including a neon company sign, a fun outdoor lounge chair, and a green wall. “Aloha” is spelled out in tile as an entry welcome mat.
