The existing farm in Akershus is beautifully situated on a gentle slope overlooking the river Glomma to the west. We were given the task to create a new design to an existing house. On the site a new extension is built to the main house of 1890. The new structure is integrated to the site by lowering the new main floor plan down to the ground. Externally natural traditional materials are used to link the new and the old structures. An internally exposed wooden truss structure identifies the new open space in the extension consisting of a living room ”allrom” and open plan kitchen. An open stair is put in place linking the existing basement to the new daily living area in the new extension. An existing basement is transformed from a cold storage space into a modern open plan bathroom with sauna. The design focus for new basement is to keep as much daylight flowing through the existing windows as possible. The new surfaces of the open space are kept simple and light consist of an aspen wooden ceiling and a polished concrete floor. The existing granite walls of the basement are exposed into the bathroom space giving it a sense of place linking the old and new structures.
