There is an old paper factory in the Litávka valley in the Czech mountain range Brdy. Its boiler house doesn’t serve its original purpose anymore and Projektil was asked to carry out the reconstruction to make it a company headquarters with a small-scale production.
Projektil embraced the qualities of the industrial architecture already present there and was careful not to override it. A self-supporting steel frame was inserted into the space of the boiler house, which effectively filled all the empty spaces within. The proportions of the building were preserved and the main means of the buildingg's revival became light and colour. All technologies necessary for production are added to the volume of the boiler house and admitted to. Steel staircases become a habitable outdoor space offering a view of the surrounding lanscape.
The entrance of the building is separated from the parts housing the production by a concrete wall and staircases. The ground floor with small windows is dedicated to the production and is equipped with grid flooring. The first floor is also dedicated to production and is divided according to the client‘s demands. Everything is well-arranged and well-lit.
The inner free-standing construction is visible and the levels are moved from the facade which allows us to shift the individual floors independently on the original one. The space of the new floors still communicates from some distance with the original facade.
This project is a contribution to the discussion whether the seemingly purposeless empty buildings within the premises of old and decrepid factories are indeed unutilisable or not. It concerns buildings which truly represent functionalism. We are convinced that all that can be done to save such buildings has to be done, especially in the context of the contemporary prefabricated industrial buildings, which can be found everywhere around the world.
