Due to the owner’s commitment to continually offer cutting edge space and unique common area features, Third Millennium Group, Owners of 540 West Madison, sought to revitalize the building’s interior retail lobby corridor with a modern, awe-inspiring sculpture. Through multiple designs and renderings, the imagination and creativity of the partnership between Third Millennium and Boii was fully exemplified.
The sculpture is installed in what was once a corporate building corridor and is now a modern, bright gallery of light and color, encouraging tenants to enjoy sea of color within a busy retail corridor. The colorful floating disks elicit a warm and positive feeling. To further enhance the ambience, subtle lighting was incorporated into the ceiling coves and the existing terrazzo floor was replaced with wood flooring.
The idea for the sculpture came from the characteristics of traditional glass blowing techniques. The irregular organic form of unique hand blown glass elements brings to mind the ever changing surface of the ocean. This had inspired the color palette: shades of blue and turquoise with white accents.
The sculpture installed in 2016 and designed by Natalia Landowska includes 2,300 hand blown glass plates and was manufactured in the Czech Republic of Bohemian crystal. This magnificent piece is called OCEAN.
