Building B at bluefactory is the first permanent structure on the former Cardinal Brewery site in Fribourg, marking a bold step toward a sustainable innovation district. Positioned at the heart of the campus, it reconnects public space with the site’s industrial heritage, the iconic silo and chimney, while introducing a contemporary architectural language. Its charred wood façade, inspired by traditional Japanese techniques, creates a striking dialogue between past and present, while the timber structure, sourced locally and highly prefabricated, offers exceptional flexibility for evolving uses.
The building’s structure is entirely made of certified Swiss wood from Fribourg, over 2,000 m³ of local material, including technical cores such as staircases, elevators, and seismic walls, a rarity at this scale in Switzerland. This choice reflects a commitment to circularity and regional resources, combined with advanced engineering and BIM modeling for precision and adaptability.
Beyond its expressive design, Building B integrates advanced environmental strategies: renewable energy production, Minergie-P-ECO certification, and an experimental water-cycle system that reintroduces natural processes into the urban fabric. Inside, a luminous central patio organizes generous workspaces, laboratories, and collaborative areas around a modular framework free of intermediate columns, ensuring adaptability for future needs.
With 7,300 m² across five levels, the building hosts restaurants, conference spaces, and prototyping workshops, serving a diverse community of researchers, start-ups, and cultural actors. More than a building, it is a catalyst for a new urban philosophy : circular, inclusive, and deeply rooted in its context, where heritage meets innovation.
