Blue Light Junction’s Dye Studio involves the interior retrofit of a 2,500 square foot repurposed auto body shop with a new accessible entry and processing deck in Baltimore’s Greenmount West Neighborhood. In addition to the interior work, the south facing brick wall is being opened with a new entry door, garden door and bay of windows to allow passive solar heating of the space as well as a connection to the dye garden. We have worked collaboratively with the business owner to design method-specific processing areas, workshops and a retail market. All displays and systems have been thoughtfully and specifically designed. A closed loop water system will allow for all water to be recycled or reused on site or in a circular dye process. The project began as a Neighborhood Design Center project through the Arts Space Technical Assistance Program. Our firm was the first architectural firm in Baltimore to sign a post-concept design support MOU to continue working alongside NDC as needed for the project. Building upon NDCS’s concept design, we have worked closely with the owner to fully customs the space to specific needs and develop a full set of construction drawings, including a full code analysis, furniture layouts and specialty built-in details. The project has required long-term coordination with a pro-bono MEP engineer, structural engineer, contractors, Baltimore City, Baltimore Green Space, Central Baltimore Partnership, and additional funders.
