My diploma projectCondition:
a former compact city
block discomposed by a road and a cake-like-shaped bank by architect Karel
Prager
nowadays the road is a important artery, which takes traffic
from the left river bank towards the outskirts, but at the same time the road
is a vital connection for pedestrians between a mall at one side and a post
office and some other public offices at the other one
Task:
the task of my diploma project was to retain the road and design
a mixed use object (containing home for elderly people, sport courts and public space) into this former city block
torso
Aim:
to successfully solve
the relationship between the block and the road
Concept:
1) The road divides the block into 2 parts
2) The designated functions are set as cuboids (the
retained road becomes a tunnel)
3) Among those cuboids is public space (passage)
4) The passage and the cuboids are covered by a
steel grille roof structure (the form of
the roof is defined by the border of the former block, by the bank buliding and
by edges of neighbouring buildings)
5) The roof becomes a partly accessible landscape
6) Above the tunnel a sports centerpiece is
created, above the other cuboids there are sport terraces
Short description:
A former city block with a busy road becomes a place for
people. The main topic of the project is public space. In the project there are
2 layers of public space: first on the ground level in the passage which
function is both a mere pedestrian thoroughfare and place where you can shop,
do sports, watch others doing sport or admire some art pieces – and second the
roof where you can go to relax, to do some sports or to go there just for an
interesting view from above.
