The Black tile house:
A single-family house with 3230ft², which sits with its main two storye height volume in the center of a 10225ft² residential site, near the seafront of Cascais, Portugal.
The concept:
The pursuit of the fundamental values of housing and its primary function of protection shaped the project. The starting point was centered in the primary demands of comfort and safety, referring to the primordial image of a shelter that surrounds us. A cover, a shell or a carapace that protects and embraces us. The remembrance to primordial materials, as stone and clay, for this protective layer was immediate leading for a search of an XXI century material bounding together tradition and modernity. New technological flat clay ceramic tiles become the precursor of the traditional clay ceramic, widely used in the past in Mediterranean architecture. This was the option for an innovating approach to coat the roof as well as the exterior facades.
The form:
In childhood, the iconic image of a House is simply reduced to the pentagon lines of symmetry This symbolic representation was the driven-geometric element of the project.
The challenge:
Unifying the concept and the form to the client needs and characteristics of the plot site became the biggest challenge. Although the client was receptive to a modern language, the project acceptance took place as the client engage with the innovative and experimental side of the process. Coating the entire house with black ceramic tiles was like building a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. The relation with the client reveals to be a similar challenge. Both turns out into successful experiences and the Black tile house is now acknowledge an iconic landmark.
