previous state
the project blackbox is dealing with
one of the special zones in the middle of europe,
in an area on the border between
italy, austria and slovenia. moggessa di quá and
moggessa di lá are two small
villages, which despite being geographically in the
heart of a highly powerful economy
paradoxically have become forgotten worlds
threatened with extinction.
during the last decades those place
were abandoned by the mayor part of the former
population, but now new people are
trying to re‐use those places, which for the
period of their vacation offers them
a new freedom and new possibilities outside and
inside the global village. together
with the old inhabitants they form a new
community, but which still needs to
be further established.
aim of the intervention
what role could public space have in
the constitution of that society?
feld72 established a new ritual as
the starting point of the formation of a new
collective identity.
description of the intervention
down in the valley, next to the
highway corridor, a big map of moggessa di lá made
of aluminium pieces is shown as a
representation of its spatial and social memory.
without knowing what will be the end‐result, every inhabitant and guest of
moggessa di lá takes a piece and carries
it with him/her on the 3hours‐procession to
the village. there in a collective
act, all the pieces are put together to a 3‐dimensional
structure which is still not
revealing its mistery. wrapped with a contemporary
preserving material, and by adding in
the final act a small lense, the blackbox arises:
a camera obscura as a space of
reflection and memory. but it is the ritual itself,
which creates in the moment of the
procession and collective construction this new
identity of the participating social
groups, connecting them by the one shared deep
experience. through the construction
of this temporary monument the public space
of moggessa di lá transforms into a
place of gathering and real encounter.
