The Bioplex is a research and education facility aiming to attract exceptional faculty, researchers, and
students to collaborate in health-related research. Anchoring the south edge of the recently constructed
Oval, it is the result of a multi-faceted effort to integrate the Bioplex into the Arrival District.
The proposed form and composition of program responds to unique site opportunities. The siting allows
an existing geothermal well field to be protected; pedestrian paths within the district to converge at an
entrance porch; existing topography to separate vehicles from pedestrians.
Upon entering the building, a generous lobby greets visitors. Shared, public circulation holds the north
edge of each level, providing equitable views of the Oval to all users. A faculty-centered programming
process led to labs consolidated as research “neighborhoods” that adapt to future needs. The upper
levels are wrapped by a façade strategy that responds to needs for solar control and discretion.
