The Binary House explores several simple dualities of modern living: flexible open spaces with user-defined areas, abundant natural lighting without excessive heat gain, and a strong relationship to the exterior without sacrificing privacy. These dualities inform the basic interlocking masses of the building and the spaces within. The house's exterior interplay of solid and void, coded with specific material designations presents a dynamic image suitable to numerous orientations. It is relatively simple to construct without specialized labor and is adaptable to many geographic and climatic conditions. The Binary House's design parameters included standard lot sizes, lumber efficiency, logical framing, shaded windows, open flexible planning, sustainability, and material clarity. The Binary House design offers a comfortable, modern lifestyle in an efficient structure that is easily built and uncomplicated to live within. See www.hometta.com for more informationThe Binary House is part of the premier collection for Hometta, whose mission is to provide home designs that are "sustainable, modern in style, and less than 2500 SF". The targeted consumer would not typically have the means to hire an Architect at normal fee rates, but appreciates higher quality contemporary design and is willing to participate in the process of constructing their new home. CD's involvement with Hometta encompassed a great deal more than just a single home design; the entire project delivery method had to be re-thought – from Client education and assistance, to developing design documentation standards, and integrating basic constructability. In contrast to pre-fabricated homes, Hometta specifically relies upon locally available skilled labor and materials for the construction of the houses. The documents must be simple to understand, open to the inclusion of common products, and able to accommodate multiple climate zones while still maintaining the specificity needed for unique designs.
