The current trend in museum design, otherwise known as “the Bilbao effect”, is that of a museum as a destination spot and therefore an economic stimulant to its region. Many argue that this has had a negative effect on the display of art and its importance within the museum. These individuals would argue for more of a traditional display of art, what many consider “the white box.” To me there is validity to both approaches. It is my intent to design this Museum of Contemporary Art through a weaving of both approaches. This museum and its site would serve multiple purposes thus allowing for the creation of a destination spot and at the same time provide the setting for a more traditional approach to the display of art. With this concept in mind I chose a site that allows the architecture to weave itself into an existing dynamic condition. The site is adjacent to a Cultural District and has a park and an existing boat ramp on it. The existing uses will remain and will be supplemented by 50,000 S.F. of new museum program and additional programs such as restaurants and shops. Achieving a museum that allows for multiple approaches to the display of art is my goal. To do this architecturally, the building will emerge and unfold from a traditional “white box.” Through the integration of live video feeds to large exterior screens the museum will share its content and its activity with the city.
